1 Star assessment

This course is for beginners to the sport, you will learn the foundation skills as well as some more advanced ones. At the end of this you will be able to paddle comfortably on flat water. There is an opportunity to get the BC *1 canoe/kayak award.

2 Star assessment

2 star assessment is quite hard to achieve, it has to be because those with 2 star are considered good enough to attended a level 1 coaching course. Good skills are required in both canoe and kayak along with an all-round knowledge of paddlesport in general.  Those aspiring to 2* will need to complete the Intermediate Canoe and Intermediate Kayak Courses, supplementing them with practical experience on the river. Therefore we think that the best way forward is to run 2 star assessments as and when there is sufficient demand. These are time consuming for coaches and there is usually a certain amount of in-assessment coaching in order to get those that are close to the standard through. Experience has shown that sometimes attendance on a 2 star course does not always mean that a paddler is up to scratch, this is one of the reasons for our change of tack this year.

PaddlePower assessments

For those not familiar with PaddlePower, it is a certification scheme aimed at youngsters. Assessment is by means of completing a number of tasks recorded in a booklet over the weeks of a course. We plan to include some of the tasks required into our junior courses but not to use them as the main driving factor. The pace of learning will be more relaxed and should allow for a lot more fun. If and when paddlers tick off all the tasks in the booklet then they will be able to claim an award. The coaches running the course will manage this as a background activity.

Other assessments
Other assessments such as 3 star kayak and FSRT will be done on an as required basis in a similar fashion to the 2 star award.

Notes

  • Courses on Tuesday and Thursday evenings will normally run from 18:30 to 20:00 unless changed by the coach(es) or as necessitated by the weather.
  • The coach(es) assigned to a course may be changed at any time due to other commitments etc.
  • Several coaches maybe be unavailable for courses for a week in June (to be confirmed) as they will be on the club’s annual alpine paddling trip. The coaches that are not attending might continue to run their respective courses but otherwise there will be no courses during that week.
  • 1, 2 & 3 star courses do not include certification costs; these will be collected separately at assessment if applicable – see below. Paddlepower (PP) courses include the cost of a Paddlepower course booklet which can be used to claim a certificate from Canoe England on completion of the course.

Pool Sessions

Our pool sessions have now ended for the season, this space will updated around September/October with information for the 2018/2019 winter.

The pool is the perfect place to gain confidence in falling out of a kayak. Depending on your skill level, we can coach you how to exit the boat safely after capsizing, progressing all the way to learning to roll the kayak back up using your paddle.

The pool session courses are held at Stonar School, Melksham.  They are run as a block of 3 sessions, over 3 consecutive weeks. There are 2 courses on each evening commencing 19:30 and 20:15 hrs respectively. There are 8 places available in each time slot.
